ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT OF IQAC 2006-07

Part A:

            Raja Bahadur Venkat Rama Reddy Women’s College, Hyderabad was established in the year 1954 by the Hyderabad Mahila Vidya Sangham. The college had the great privilege of having Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi and the President of India Hon. Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam as dignitaries at different functions organized by the college during the last 50 years of its glorious existence.

The main objective of the institution is to promote quality education among women hailing from the backward regions of the state. In consonance with this objective, 60% of the seats at the undergraduate level are reserved for girl students hailing from rural areas and the college provides hostel accommodation in the campus.

Autonomy was conferred on the college in 1989 and several new programmes and a few certificate courses were introduced under autonomy. Semester system was introduced in 2000-2001.

During 5th – 7th Jan 2006, NAAC Peer Team visited the college for reaccreditation.The college was reaccredited with grade ‘A’.

In the meetings of QAC and IQAC that are conducted in the college, during 2006-07, the points discussed and the action taken are given below in brief.

1.“To encourage more students to Karate. Students are made to understand the importance of attending Karate was for self-defense.” Students are counseled

2.“Sponsor a couple of Certificate Courses available in the college.”
Management accepted to sponsor Food Technology – Canning and Preservation of Fruits” Certificate Course this year-or any one course such that the financial burden is not very heavy.

3.“College name plate to have college accreditation.”
College name board is updated to have college reaccreditation status.

4.“Students certificates and Record Books have to be made with better quality paper.” Work is under consideration and the quality of students’ certificates and the Record Book will be better in the next academic year.

5.“To study introduction of Choice Based Credit System.”
Studying the introduction of Choice Based Credit System.

6.“Placement Cell may charge registration charges.”
Placement Cell of P.G. started the process this year for Campus Placements at all places.

7.“Mineral water Plant at a cost of Rs. 1.75 lakhs is recommended for the college.” The management is considering to install a Mineral Water Plant for the benefit of students.
8.“Salaries of staff, remuneration for BOS members and invited speakers for talks to be increased.

The salaries of the staff are revised. Remuneration for BOS members and speakers of invited lectures are increased. It is also decided to meet a part of travel expenditure when students are taken for field trips.

9.“To encourage sports in the college, the college is advised to admit sports achievers into the college and waive tuition fee for them.”The sports students joined in the general merit list and therefore they did not require a special sports quota.

10 .“NAAC grading should be printed in all stationary including students’ certificates, letter heads, envelopes, etc.” NAAC grading is printed in all necessary stationary material.

                        During the academic year 2005-2006 the college has introduced M.Sc (Chemistry) and M.Sc (Mathematics) courses. The students of these courses have entered into M.Sc final year this year.

Very popular course. 3 batches have completed out of which 1 is exclusively for SC, ST students who were paid Rs. 100 each towards stipend.

The syllabi for all the courses mentioned above are prepared to suit the requirements under the supervision of the BOS members. The syllabi for the newly introduced Certificate Courses, is prepared under the supervision of the experts in the concerned fields

 

 

The Internal Assessment Test that are introduced to the 1st year students last year are extended to the 2nd year students this academic year. The pattern of evaluation is the same as last year. The internal marks are for 10 and the final semester marks are for 40 out of 50. This will be extended to the final year students next year. Practical evaluation is continuous and remains as before with 20 marks for continuous evaluation and 30 marks for the end final examination for a total marks of 50.

With the introduction of new P.G. courses and the new combination of U.G. courses entering into 2nd and 3rd year, the number of teachers increased to 132 with 42 aided and 90 unaided teachers. There are 18 aided non-teaching staff and 59 unaided non-teaching staff and 6 aided and 9 unaided office staff in the college. With this, the teaching staff and non-teaching staff ratio is 4:3.

The unit cost of education is Rs. 10, 832/- inclusive of salaries and Rs. 1,672/- exclusive of salaries for the undergraduate courses.

Four aided members of teaching staff availed the FIP for doctoral study. While one member received her doctorate from J.N.T.U., all the other three are ready to submit their theses shortly. Two of them are permitted to extend their FIP by 3 months.

From the seed money allotted by the college management, two members of the staff are chosen to be given an amount of Rs. 5,000 each for pursuing their research degrees.

With the increase of awareness among staff, a number of aided and unaided teaching staff have registered for Ph.D.

During 2006-07, staff have attended a number of OC/RC and seminars. They have organized seminars, invited lectures, presented papers and authored books/part of books. The details are furnished in the table below:

Staff participate in various other programmes in addition to the teaching and other academic work. A few types of work the staff are involved in are mentioned below.

I. Ms.A.G.Suneethy Reddy, who retired recently as a Principal of the College was a number of the   NAAC peer Team 4 times for accreditation to several College across the Country.

II. She also attended Principal’s Meeting convened by UGC (SERO) at Hyderabad delivered a lecture on “Functioning of Autonomous College”.

III. It is a moment of happiness for the College when the Principal of the College was nominated as a member of Senate of Osmania University, Hyderabad. Smt.P.Venkata Lakshmi has taken over the charge of the Principal of the College after the retirement of Ms.A.G.Suneethy Reddy since December 2006.

IV. Dr. Ranganayaki of Botany Department was invited to attend an International Conference at Canada.

V. Dr.M.V.Lakshmi Devi, HOD of Sociology Department prepared multimedia lesson for Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad. She has also prepared Radio lesson for the same University and both of these lessons were broadcast this academic year.

A proposal for a research project on Distance Education is submitted to IGNOU, New Delhi and another proposal for a major research project is submitted to UGC, New Delhi this year, by Dr.M.V.Lakshmi Devi. The Department of Sociology started an advocacy programme on Women and Girl child to create awareness among students. It was also extended to Osmania University Law College. The Department has conducted a survey of “Competency of students in 21st Century” for which data was collected from job aspirants, employees and educationists and this data is analysed. She was also involved in panel discussion in a couple of programmes conducted by E-television regarding social and general themes.

vi. Dr.Sujatha John , HOD in physics and IQAC Co-ordinator has been nominated as a member of the QAC of NAAC accredited AMS Degree College, Hyderabad. She had also been special invitee for their IQAC meetings in their college.


vii.  NCC Unit under the able guidance of LT.Sunitha has been very active throughout the year. One student cadet participated Republic Day Parade-2007 at New Delhi and another cadet is selected to attend Youth Exchange Programme at Singapore in June 2007, 2 cadets participated in local Republic Day Parade at Hyderabad and 3 others participated in Talsainik Camp at New Delhi . Lt.Sunitha received the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh’s Medal for Best Script in Flag Area Competitions during Inter group competitions.


viii.  The NSS unit has conducted a free EYE camp for students and staff in the college premises. The unit Coordinator Ms.M.Jyothi attended a Workshop organized by the NSS unit of Osmania University, Hyderabad.

 The International Womens day was celebrated in the college. Dr.M.Bharathi, a Best Teacher Awardee and a great literary personality of Andhra Pradesh, who was the recipient of innumerable literary awards had delivered a lecture on “Womens Rights and the balance between the protection of womens rights and Home Making”.

In connection with “Year of Student Participation for Quality Assurance”, a lecture on the same topic was organized in December 2006. Dr. Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier, Principal of Loyola Academy, Hyderabad, assisted by Dr. Agna Joseph, HOD in Commerce from the same college delivered a lecture in the College auditorium.

The staff contributed to CM’s relief fund to help those affected by natural calamities. Some of them continue to involve themselves in the activities of Manasa, a day–care home for the mentally challenged children. The developmental activities at the two slums adopted by the department of sociology went on undeterred, the activities at Galigudem, the Village adopted by the same department are stepped up.

The three libraries are well equipped with books. The Degree and P.G. Libraries are computerized for lending, purchase of books and for stock verification. The timings of the libraries are adjusted to suit the needs of the students.

The library continues to be connected with O.U. library for Inter Library borrowing. It has open access system, which is very useful to the students and the staff. The details of the books available are furnished below.

Student-Book ratio for each subject is 1: 6 .The amount spent on books for the library this year is Rs 5, 52, 480.

Remedial Classes are organized for slow learners. Many students are benefited out of it and the records are maintained professionally.

The central Computer Facility free of charge with Internet facility is being used by staff and students. Students continue to use this facility for documentation of their project work.

Many students received financial aid from the Govt. in the form of BC, SC and ST scholarships. A total of 696 students are sanctioned B.C. scholarships, 179 S.C., 36 S.T. scholarships. While 7 students are sanctioned Minority Welfare scholarship, 1 student received a prestigious Merit Scholarship for standing first at District level at Intermediate for which Rs. 10,000 was awarded. Some of them receive the merit scholarships instituted in the college through donations from philanthropists. Achievers in sports received cash prizes as token of appreciation. In order to appreciate and encourage academically talented students, the management reimbursed tuition fee for toppers in Arts, Science and Commerce faculties in non-scholarship category.

The students participate in all academic and cultural activities in the college and outside the college too. They received several prizes outside the college. The details of the prizes won are mentioned in the next page. The college magazine was brought out, as usual in 5 languages to bring out the hidden and creative talents of the students.

The students’ Feedback is received this year also. The points regarding facilities and teaching are carefully analyzed and appropriate measures are being taken. Action taken on teachers, who are asked to improve in specific areas is kept totally confidential.

The grievances of the students are also attended through the suggestion boxes kept at various places in the college. The grievances and the action taken on each grievance are recorded in the Grievance Register.

The administration of the college is totally computerized. The admission process, results of examination and issue of certificates are all computerized.

This year two science laboratories are constructed for the use of M. Sc Chemistry students with a total area of 1440 sq. ft. This makes the total number of science labs to 30 in the college. A games room and another classroom with an area of 1440 sq. ft. are also constructed. Work for the extension of Hostel building commenced already and the building is likely to be put to use from July 2007.

The cooperative stores continues to be run by the staff. All the stationary needs of the college are available in the stores. This includes all the long Note Books and Record Books of all science subjects exclusively done for the college students with the name of the college printed on the books.

The Canteen continues to provide variety of tasty, nutritious and popular items at reasonable rates. It is run by an outside agency and it is very popular among the students and staff.

The gym is attached to the newly constructed games room. The variety of the gym equipment is widely used by the students and staff. Hostel students use it outside the college hours also. A proposal for the purchase of a new table tennis table at a cost of around Rs. 12,000/- is in the final stage. A student  who bagged the 1st prize in Intercollegiate chess and another, who participated in all India Ball Badminton Tournaments received cash incentives from the college.

Students are counseled to undergo training in Karate. An instructor from outside accepted to train the students from next academic year.

All the equipment in the Audio Visual room is maintained to be in good condition. An OHP is acquired by the Botany Department and four public address systems are brought for four different wings of the college. For monitoring the class rooms, a close circuit TV is being tried on an experimental basis. The management is considering installing a mineral water plant at a cost of 1.75 lakhs as per the recommendations of IQAC members. This Water Plant will be in addition to the already existing solar water purifier available in the college.

The Alumni Association is active. The Parent Teacher meets provide a platform for discussing the all round growth of the students. It provides scope for identifying the areas for improvements of college through enhanced inter-personal relationships among staff and students.

The Health Center that is established in the college is highly beneficial to the students, staff and particularly the hostel students. The service of the doctor and also the hospital with which the college has an MoU are utilized extensively by all needy in the college.

The Placement Cell, under the able guidance of the Dr. Renuka and Ms. P. Vijaya enhanced the activities this year. Several companies, including WIPRO & INFOSYS interviewed our students and several of them got placements. Those selected for WIPRO have facilities to upgrade their qualification to M.S. from BITS, Pilani through distance education. , as they work. This cell has also conducted a “Two day Job Fair” for all the students of twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and a number of students from our college were offered jobs in the fair by reputed organizations. To make the students more responsible and accountable, the P.G students are charged a small amount towards registration charges to enroll themselves through the Placement Cell.

The college has MoU’s with 14 organizations. 4 members of the staff attended a course in Solar Physics, with one such organization etc., Swamy Ramananda Teeratha Rural Institute. This enables them to start a Certificate Course in Solar Physics.

Encouraged by the grade achieved by the college during the reaccreditation by NAAC in Jan 2006 and identifying the grey areas that require hard work, the staff and students of the college have drawn a bigger plan to raise the quality of the college to greater heights in the years to come.

Vision:

  1. To construct an Academic Block costing around Rs 2.5 crore.
  2. To start a few other courses like a course in Food Technology.
  3. To start a few more Post Graduate Courses.
