Profile:
The department of physics was established, in 1962 offering physics to PUC students. In 1965 - 66 the department started offering physics to the students of the newly introduced course B.Sc (M.P.C) in English medium. Later the same course was introduced for Telugu medium students from 1972 - 74 onwards
Progression:
The college introduced a new course for B.Sc with Maths, Physics and Computer science combination in English medium under autonomy. The department also started offering physics for students of B.Sc with Maths, physics and electronics i.e. M.P.E combination in the year 2005 - 06 in English medium. This course was discontinued from the academic year 2008 - 2009 due to the decline in demand as the outgoing students did not have any additional advantage for either job placements or higher studies. At present electronics is offered to students with Maths and computer science combinations in English medium.
- The department now offers physics to students of two courses.
- 1. M.P.C (E.M & T.M)
- 2. M.P.Cs (E.M)
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The department was very fortunate to have very committed, sincere and knowledgeable faculty right from the inception of the department. Mrs. V. Dharmamba was the first HOD of the department and also the first Vice - Principal of the college who served till 1986. she along with the other members of the department was instrumental in developing the department initially. Later the mantel was taken over by Dr. R. Kamala, who with the support of other members took the department to greater heights by introducing new methodologies in theory and practicals. After she took over as the principal in 1999, the department continued to have a robust development. It is the untiring selfless committed hard work and service oriented attitudes of the retired heads, retired lecturers, lab demonstrators, lab staff of the department, which made the department grow from teaching and training the students in handling and using simple measuring instruments like vernier calipers to the usage of modern equipments like fibre - optic kits, lasers and also renewable energy source kits.
The department takes pride to mention that ours was the first college in the O.U. Jurisdiction to introduce special topics
- Fourier optics
- Optical fibres and their applications
- Applications of Bio - physics
- Astro physics.
- In practicals the following new experiments are introduced
- Computer simulated experiments
- COMPUTER SIMULATED - REFRACTION - SNELL'S LAW
- COMPUTER SIMULATED - INTERFERENCE DOUBLE SLIT experiment &
ASTRONOMICAL REFRACTING TELESCOPE
Experiments using fibre optic kits ,solar cells.
- Nano technology is introduced from 2011 - 2012 in paper VII for III year students.
- Two electives namely Solid – State Physics & Spectroscopy and Instrumentation are offered to final year students from 2011 - 2012.
- Project work is introduced for final years in practical paper IV from 2011 - 2012
- The Department has an MOU with Physitech Electronics a reputed electronic company for giving training to students in doing their project work in the premesis of the college.
Activities :
1. The department has a committed and dedicated faculty who are working for giving their best to their students for imparting skills in learning and appreciating physics concepts, and also strive for their overall developments. To enhance their own knowledge and widen their contribution, members attend workshops, orientation courses, refresher courses, seminars etc.
2. To encourage students participation the members of the department take up various activities like conduct student seminars, workshops, quiz, educational tours, extension lectures etc.
3. Students are encouraged to do small theoretical projects and also give seminars in the regular classes.
4. All the members contributed in bringing out practical manuals for our students in both media.
5. Question banks were updated as and when there is a change in the syllabii.
6. Revised syllabi and revised model papers are prepared in Telugu medium also for the benefit of the students.
7. Tutorial classes and remedial classes are conducted for weak and needy students.
8. Students have continuous assessments in their practical work.
9. Being autonomous the department had the freedom in introducing new practicals experiments which are not offered by the other affiliated colleges.
10. Looking at the energy scenario in the world and the role played by the renewable energy sources in boosting the economy of the country the department has introduced a one month certificate course in "Renewable energy applications" for B.Sc III yr students from 2010 - 2011.
Two members trained at Swami Ramananda Theertha Institute For Rural development contributed in framing the syllabus and also teaching. The department/College has an MOU with the institute.
11. Students were taken to an educational tour to Solarcon 2010 held at Hyderabad to have a glimpse of the solar power industry.
12. One member who is well trained in ABACUS from ALAMA international, a company conducting ABACUS courses, has taken up training school children from a school as an extension activity work from 2010 - 2011.
13. The department has been rated as one of the highly ranked departments of college under CPE (College with potential for Excellence) by UGC. As a project under the programme, the electricity and electronics labs of the department are now made solar powered.
14. The departments is offering a new certificate course on Awareness of consumer electronics and domestic appliances.
15. The department has also taken up the responsibility of conducting one hobby course i.e. Fabric painting for all first year students from 2011-2012.
16.The department has started a physics club with the sole aim of inculcating interest in physical sciences and spreading the awareness among students.
Vision:
To be a department which is updated and equipped with modern teaching techniques for preparing the women student to meet the challenges of the complex and competitive world and contribute to the society at large.
Mission:
1. Introduction of computer simulated experiments for B.Sc final year also, from 2011 - 2012
2. To acquire more sophisticated equipment useful for teaching and research.
3. To increase the interaction with laboratories and industries.
4. To strengthen the research activity.
5. To conduct a national seminar in nanotechnology.
6. To conduct a two day orientation course for school teachers for physical and life sciences.
7. To conduct a state level seminar in global warming and climate changes.
8. To introduce MATLAB in B.Sc first year as a part of curriculum from the year 2012-2013.
9. To organize competitions in poster presentations, power point presentations, inter collegiate quiz, seminars through the physics club.
10. To install crystal studio software for teaching the elective paper "Solid State Physics".
11. To conduct seminars in crystallography and spectroscopy for the benefit of students who opted these a elective papers.
12. To convert all the labs into solar powered labs.
13. To develop solar park with musical fountain in the premises of the college.
14. To introduce a new course MPECs.
15. To introduce CBCS system.
16. To introduce M.Sc Physics(nano-technology).
The department is maintaining a Departmental library with a collection of about 600+ books. The collection includes text books, general books and reference books. Staff and student have access to use these books for their perusal. The department has two a computers with a printer for the benefit of the members.
