Faculty of English

The Department of English was established in 1954 with 2 lecturers. It is now a full-fledged Department with a faculty of thirteen.


The Courses offered are

  1. General English for B.A, B.Sc and B.Com.
  2. Modern Language English (English Language and Literature) for B.A.
  3. Spoken English is an additional subject for all the I year Degree students.
  4. English/Business English/ Soft skills for B.B.M.T I and II year students.
  5. Communicative English is a one month certificate course consisting of 50 hour sessions for Degree students.

Details of the Curriculum-2006 onwards:

I.

  • General English is taught to all students of I, II, III and IV semesters
  • English Language and Literature is offered as an optional subject with History and Sociology.
  • Spoken English: Certificate Course in Spoken English & Communicative English is offered to the students.
  • A language lab has been set up to teach Spoken & Communicative English effectively. After the completion of the short-term course,
          certificates are given to the students.


II

  • Syllabus for General English is designed to expose/initiate the students to the different genre in literature i.e., Prose, Poetry, Novel, Short Stories and Grammar. They are also taught Precis writing, Note making, Curriculum Vitae, Business Letters, Report Writing and Description. An Anthology of Prose and poems. The Bachelor of Arts by R.K. Narayan is also prescribed. Students of Business English taught to write essays on current events, minutes of the meetings and interpretation of data. Students of English language and literature have a unique syllabus with a perfect blend of language and literature SEM-I introduce the students to English literature, understanding Poetry, Prose appreciation with a focus on communication and language skills. Sem-II deals with the various literature movements in addition to understanding the study of Drama.

  • The Syllabus is so very challenging helpful for the students to go for P.G Entrance Tests, Bank Exams & Administrative service Exams and also gain proficiency in literature and language.

  • Communicative and Spoken English is taught for all the I year Degree students with special emphasis slow learners in order to help them to join the main stream.
  • The syllabus and testing pattern is designed by the department which caters to the changing needs and demands of the students.


  • English/Business English/Soft Skills BBMT I & II year

    1. Compulsory Certificate course in Communicative is offered to all I year B.A, B.Com & B.Sc students.
    2. An advanced certificate course in Communicative English offered to students who opt for the course under category of compulsory Certificate Courses.


Curriculum design and development:

General English is taught to all 1st year and 2nd year as a compulsory subject for the degree 1st year students. One class of spoken English course is designed to help the students improve their conversational skills. Dialogue writing is one of the components in order to help the students develop their confidence level and quick reporter. The curriculum for General English is designed genre-wise. Prose essays comprising descriptive, narrative, autobiographic, informal, personal one prescribed to help the students learn the various styles of writing. Language work and discussion of questions and class-room presentations are taken care of after the completion of each essay. The students are tested twice within a semester by way of internal assessment exams. After the end of each semester, final exam is held .Since majority of the students in some classes are slow learners and T/M students. They are given extra attention in order to help them improve written skills. They are given study material notes, especially when they are from Telugu Medium background. The course for Undergraduate students under B.A, B.Sc, and B.Com semester wise is designed in consultation with experts groups to suit the students’ professional and personal needs.


The Diploma course of two Semesters is started from this academic year 2011-2012. The thrust of the course is on Communication Skills. Each Semester comprises 72 hours of teaching and practice. The syllabus for Semester I is communication skills, voice, speech, diction, movement, stage speech and art of public speaking. Semester II deals with the physical and intellectual needs of the character, motivation and justification. It also involves working with the Director, Acting for TV, Films and Radio. Play reading sessions and Practice sessions that is play presentation, or a short play or a street play constitute the content of the course. The diploma will be awarded based on students’ performance and written test at the end of each Semester.

    Activities
      • The Department of English conducted an extension lecture on ‘Theatre for Life Styles’ on 7th December 2010.
      • A workshop for the Staff on ‘Role play and Inter personal Relationship’ was organized on 8th February, 2011.
      • A one day workshop for students was organized on ‘Media and Theatre’ on
        1st March 2011, as a forerunner for certificate course on Media and Theatre for Academic year 2011-12.
