Faculty of Chemistry

About The Department
Even before the formation of the state, foundation stone was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for the college complex. Chemistry department has been the heartthrob of the college since then. From spirit lamp studies to modern laboratory equipment, the department has made steady and giant strides over the last 55years.

The Department grew horizontally and vertically with Chemistry mixing well with all the combinations like Maths, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry. Even when there was enormous craze for Engineering and Medicine the demand for Chemistry combination is undiminished over decades, in view of Quality education of the Department.

The Chemistry Department was instrumental in churning out many students who have become Engineers, Doctors, Lecturers and Scientists serving in India & abroad. The Chemistry Department still remains the backbone of the college with highest student intake.

The department’s focus is on quality education and making forays into high end combinations like Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, which have become the new buzzwords. Chemistry Department has contributed members for the chair of Principals for 38 years out of 55 years of the college’s existence.

It is the untiring, selfless & committed hard work of all the retired heads, lecturers and lab assistants which has laid the strongest edifice for robust development of the department for the last 55years.

The Department has a committed and dedicated faculty of lecturers who are untiringly working for the cause of promoting Chemistry as a science study. To further this cause and to widen the students’ horizon the Department regularly conducts seminars, workshops, extension lecturers, exhibitions and study tours.

Department is growing horizontally and vertically with chemistry mixing well with all the combinations like Maths, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology , Biochemistry, MLT.

Syllabus is revised, redesigned on a regular basis incorporating the recent trends.

The Board of Studies in chemistry meets once in a year and reviews the syllabus, model papers, and panel of examiners and suggests ways and means for continual improvement.

On the basis of new U.G.C model curriculum 2001, Department of Chemistry was first amongst all the affiliated colleges to frame and implement new syllabus from the academic year 2003-04 for all B.Sc Chemistry Courses. Again during the academic year 2009-10 the syllabus is revised & redesigned on the basis of new UGC model curriculum 2001 & A.P Common Core Syllabus for all the B.Sc Chemistry combinations.

Taking utmost advantage of the autonomy to the college the Department has introduced Vocational and also research oriented practical like Adulteration tests and using the principle of Steam distillation, extraction of Eucalyptus oil, clove oil, Aloe Vera extract, rosewater. Analysis of purity of drugs like Vitamin C, Analgin, Comparative study of Antacids. Preparation of cosmetics like soap, toothpaste, toothpowder, cold cream at B.Sc III year level.

Bridge course in Chemistry was offered for the qualified intermediate students under vocational stream who were admitted into the B.Sc Chemistry combination.

Question Banks are updated semester wise

To Supplement to the classroom theory and Lab Room practice and to give maximum exposure to external expertise, the chemistry department is conducting extension lectures seminars, workshops, Industrial tours and exhibitions with all round participation.

Group projects are undertaken by the students on various topics regularly.

M.Sc Chemistry course with organic specialization commenced from the academic year 2005-06.
